What is an advanced electronic signature?

Under the eIDAS Regulation, an advanced electronic signature must be uniquely linked to the signatory, make it possible to identify the signatory, be created using means under the signatory’s control, and be linked to the signed data in such a way that any subsequent change can be detected.

Where is it used?

You may encounter an advanced electronic signature where it is important to link a signature to a particular person more reliably while protecting the signed document against undetectable changes. Compared with a basic electronic signature, it must meet additional technical and security requirements laid down by eIDAS.

An advanced electronic signature is not the same as a qualified electronic signature. A qualified signature must meet further conditions, in particular it must be based on a qualified certificate and created using a qualified electronic signature creation device.
